EMI3Magnom filtration

Magnetic filtration for ferrous wear debris.

EMI is the Australian distributor of Magnom magnetic filters. A Magnom unit pulls steel wear particles out of oil, fuel and coolant as they pass, without restricting flow. When the core is full it is cleaned and refitted, so there is no element to replace.

How it works

A magnet in the flow path.

Most filters are sieves, rated by the size of particle they stop. JCB's testing found conventional suction filters capture particles of around 125 micron and larger, while the most damaging wear particles are 1 to 40 micron.

A Magnom unit holds ferrous particles on a magnetic core instead of trapping them in a mesh. Oil passes the core freely, so the unit does not clog. Bosch Rexroth measured no increase in pressure drop with a fully loaded unit.

In testing by ExxonMobil and Allison Transmission, iron in a heavy transmission lubricant fell from about 450 ppm to about 25 ppm.

The core comes out, is cleaned and goes back in. The full test reports are on Magnom's testing page.

With EMI3

Checking the core, as part of the service.

A magnetic filter only protects the system if someone looks at the core and cleans it. That visual check can be included as a task in the EMI3 maintenance applications, alongside the rest of the machine's service.

See ZoneMaintenance and RouteMaintenance.
